Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You

Is there anything more annoying than telemarketers? I can honestly say that telemarketing has caused me to abandon my traditional phone line. With roughly 75% of my calls being “phone spam”, I have abandoned the days of making phone calls via the Local Telco. Instead, I’m doing what so many others are doing…using my cell phone exclusively!

There is one small glimmer of hope! Last week, the FCC activated the National Do Not Call Database. Now, you can go to their site and add you name to the millions of others who do not wish to be awakened at 7am on a Saturday morning by someone wanting to sell you a brand new satellite system.

Now, if only we could do something about all this spam.

How about you? Have you registered yet?

Conservatives Love the G5 Too!

Last week, Apple Computer released the specs on their new G5 PowerMac. Sporting new 64-Bit IBM Power970 processors, SATA hard drives, PCI-X, and screaming FSB speeds, Apple has finally provided a hardware platform worthy to run Mac OS X. For the past few years, I have loved using Mac OS X in lieu of Windows, but always knew that I was sacrificing speed/performance for the sake of usability. Let’s hope that when these new PowerMacs ship that they deliver all they’ve promised.

On a related note, Rush Limbaugh weighed in on this topic (no pun intended) as reported on Chris Pirillo’s blog. Seems that Rush is a huge Mac fan (really, no pun intended). According to the conservative mouthpiece, “The G5 is going to go to 64 bits, and it’s going to change everything - which is why I’m so frustrated that this technology isn’t more mainstream. ”

Well, I agree that 64-bit computing will be the future of personal computing AND I wish that more users would see the benefits of Mac OS X, however, I see the release of the G5 as evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Rush goes on to imply that Apple’s lack of market share is directly related to their politics (Al Gore sits on their board). That statement just puts a smile on my face! So, it seems that liberal politics are keeping Apple computer from desktop dominance! Of course! It all makes sense now!

We’ve seen it time and time again, loyal readers. Companies appoint non-conservatives to leadership positions and all of sudden they are headed for financial ruin. Just look what happened to Enron…oh wait. Nevermind. Bring on the G5!

What are your thoughts on Apple Computers, Rush Limbaugh and the future of computing?

You Won’t Like Me When I’m Angry

Minutes ago, I returned home from watching “The Hulk”. As a huge fan of the Hulk TV Series, I’ve been waiting for the screen adaptation of Stan Lee’s comic. All I can say is that Eric Bana and Ang Lee owe my friends and I $8–each. What an amazingly terrible film. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “…hey the effects don’t look that bad.” And you’d be right. The effects weren’t all together that bad. I’m talking about writing and ACTING! Within the first 10 mins of the flick, we were laughing at the terrible acting of Eric Bana and oscar winner Jennifer Connely. Promise me that if you get the urge to see the Hulk that you will remember my words of wisdom and do something much more meaningful with your hard-earned eight bucks.

Home Sweet Home

Is there anything better than being home again? I took advantage of some vacation time to travel home to see the folks and am really enjoying myself. Misty and I have been hitting our normal hometown favorites and visiting with old friends. Oh and its actually summer out here! Loma Linda had seen one too many “June-Gloom” days for this California boy. With temps in the 90’s, it feels like late June in the Bake.

Today was also WWDC. For those with a life outside of technology, it was Apple Computer’s big day to show off their latest and greatest. Stone and I enjoyed receiving text updates live from the conference via IRC. Collaborating in a text only environment for over 2 hours had a very Matrix-like feel to it. As for the conference, I am sorry to announce that Apple insists on introducing new technologies that are very hard on the pocket book. Why the inovation, Mr. Jobs, why? I’ve been looking for a reason to sell the Dell notebook that I am writing this post on, but with no new notebook offerings I’ll probably settle for a nicely priced iBook. More on that over at my other site: twojeffs.net

For those looking forward to Gallery updates, I’ve added a new Vegas album chronicling the Summer 2003 trip and a few shots from the Graduation season. I’ll soon be uploading a large portion of my photo library to the site, but will be limiting access to the Friends & Family section to…well…friends and family. If you would like to have full access, let me know and I’ll setup an account for ya.

So, how are you spending your summer vacation? Go ahead, make us jealous.

This Blood in My Veins is For You

A full moon peaks out over mountains streching skyward and you’re giving me the shivers.

I got back this afternoon after spending Sunday with my family. It was a really nice visit and many happy memories were created and tucked away for a future time. How about you? Did you get to spend Father’s Day with your Pops?

On the way home, I avoided my first speeding ticket. There I was traveling on I-5 S at about 80MPH in the #4 lane, when I notice I’m being followed by a Subaru WRX. We rode along for a couple of miles–at the aforementioned speed and *no faster*–when I saw a CHP cruiser slide in out of no where and turn on the sirens. The WRX caved and pulled over to the left. The CHP officer was content to ticket this guy for doing 80MPH in a 70MPH zone. Although, I’m sure he rang him up for tinted windows (illegal in CA) and maybe non-DOT approved tail lights. You’re tax dollars at work, folks.

Have any run-ins with the law lately?

Now, drive your import tuner nicely…

Understand the choice

The speech is over and things went well. Yesterday was quite a day. The grad service was awesome and I was honored to be a part of the presidential platform. All of the speakers did very well and I really felt like I owned the moment (thanks to Leanne for the inspirational mantra).

Let me tell you, under TV lights and in front of 3000 people, you’re mind starts to do weird things. I was having to make a physical effort to keep myself focused on the moment and prepared to deliver the speech.

Now that its over, I can actually focus my energies on other projects. So, what’s next?

Own the Moment

Well, my speech is about 2 hours away. I figured what more relaxing & therapeutic activity could I undertake than writing a blog entry? I’m feeling pretty good this morning even off of 3 hours sleep. I am going to put on all of my academic regalia and run through the speech a few times in my kitchen and then off to the show!

I’m feeling good and just hope that I can “own the moment” and appreciate the opportunity I’ve been given. Send me your positive thoughts, loyal readers and I’ll report back when its all over.

And Sometimes They Make You Proud…

My mom is a great lady. She has always put her children ahead of her own successes. Today, she will be graduating and earning her Master’s Degree in Education. I am so proud of her! Once my sister and I were out of school, Mom had an opportunity to focus on her own education. She has earned a B.A. and now an M.A. in education and each day she does nothing less than change the world through teaching.

What’s really cool is that she’ll receive her degree tonight and I’ll receive mine tomorrow. Mom, you always say how proud you are of me but I hope you know how incredibly proud I am of you!

The Motion of the Ocean

Well, the speech is officially done. Wow and I’ve got almost 72 hours before having to present it! Nice. So, today I’m doing the whole rehersal thing–in my kitchen. The kitchen has nice acoustics and I really feel like I have a booming voice. Who would have thought that a 3.5 minute speech could stir up such butterflies?

I was reading a book on public speaking at B&N the other day and the author pointed out that nervousness is really just misplaced energy. Kind of a nice concept, eh? So, I’m doing my best to channel this “energy” into delivering the best speech possible and away from my shaking hands :)
The other cool thing is that the speech is going to be televised! In addition, there will also be a webstream of the event! Cool! So, assuming everything goes well, I’ll post the link to the feed after the speech is safely delivered. If it doesn’t go well…well then you’ll have to hunt the link down on your own!

So Hard to Say Goodbye

Wow. The speech is actually coming together. I think it has something to do with the late hour. For some reason, I just feel so much more verbose at one in the morning. Writing a commencement speech is tricky business, you know. There are so many emotions involved in a graduation ceremony and the challenge is to capture the moment in words. For some reason, writing the high school grad speech was not this tough. Maybe because in high school, we thought that what we were doing had such monumentous implications. Today, we understand how insignificant our accomplishments are in the grand scheme of life.

Wow…this diet cherry coke really packs a punch.

Everything In Its Right Place

Just got back from another incredible meal at Alfredo’s. (Thanks again, Stone, for the recommendation.) While we were there, a large group from the medieval times fair entered the restaurant. How did we know they were from the medieval Fair? Well, they were still in full costume and proud to be celebrating their passion for all things “medieval”.

This little snapshot of humanity made me realize something: If you’re hobby requires you to wear some sort of “costume”, whether it be a medieval knight, a Klingon warrior or a Starship Captain, it may be time to expand your horizons.

But what do I know?

After all, one of my hobbies is this site…

Say Cheese

Just wanted everyone to know that the much hyped and much delayed is up and running. Currently, you will only find a few choice photos, however, that will soon change. The gallery is powered by the open-source program “Gallery” which is a PHP-based management system. Powering the Gallery with PHP allows me to setup users and permissions for loyal (read: trusted) visitors.

As for now, enjoy the early offerings and check back soon for new content.

How I Mastered Embryo In Ten Weeks

As promised, here’s the paper.

Now that its posted, please stop emailing in requests for it. It’s really starting to overload the ol’ email servers.

Now, read your embryo papers nicely…

Here a Chick, There a Chick, Everywhere a Chick-Chick

Today, I’m busy finishing up my Embryo Lab final exam. It was one of those take-home exams that you always think will be easier than a traditional final exam. Somewhere after the 7th or 8th hour of working on the thing, it dawns on you that it would be soUPDATE: After literally hunderds of requests, I’ve agreed to post the document on this site as soon as its finished. Try to contain your excitement and check back here for all the juicy details.
