DMB Show Review: 7/27/03

The second California stop on the 2003 Tour was once again held at the aforementioned Home Depot Center. Excitement was very high for this show as the guys put on an amazing set the previous night. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of witnessing a “back-to-back” DMB show, let me explain. Both the band and the fans alike realize that these shows are meant to be viewed as a collective. That is, night one is really just Part 1 or Disc 1, if you will. So, it was fitting that the guys ended “Night 1″ with “Stay” and delievered it as an admonition to fans to return for the conclusion.

In addition, Misty and I were lucky to get 3rd row tickets for this show (the first time we’ve even been out of the 2nd tier!). We got to the Home Depot Center around 6:15 pm and took our seats. Awesome. Third row put us about 10ft from all the action. The Roots came out and put on a great opening act for a second consecutive night. These guys really have a unique brand of hip hop/rock and as Dave said when introducing them “…they are one of the greatest bands in the world…”.

The guys came out around 8:00pm and played their first few songs with the sun setting. The contrasts between day/night made for an intimate setting as the show progressed. Digging deep to match the previous night’s awesome setlist, the guys were really giving it all they had. That is until Leroi started digging deep. Literally. During “What Would You Say”, thousands watch as poor Leroi got very sick. Sick as in all over the stage sick. Soon, security and personnel were on scene helping a very ill-looking Leroi Moore off the stage. The guys, however, never missed a beat and rattled off the following song without a hitch. Dave came up to the mike during a break and said, “Thank you for sticking around for tonight even though one of us can’t.” We would later find out–courtesy of dmband.com–that Leroi had been battling a stomach virus and had tried to make it through the night against the advice of the tour doctors.

Despite missing one of their own, the guys delivered an awesome set including DANCING NANCIES which is one of the few songs we had yet to hear during previous tour stops. It was so sweet to hear this gem performed live. Here is the complete setlist for the evening:

So Much To Say
What Would You Say
Rhyme & Reason
When The World Ends
The Stone
Don?t Drink the Water
Fool To Think
Too Much
Jimi Thing
Crash
Dancing Nancies
I Did It
Grace Is Gone
What You Are

ENCORE:
Gravedigger
The Maker
Tripping Billies

Final impressions of the two HDC shows were very high. An awesome setlist over two nights combined with 3rd row tickets made these two show some of the most memorable yet. Now off to Chula Vista for stop #3.
