Debate Impressions

I’ve been trying to convey the impression I get when I watch Bush speak and tonight Jessi Klein summed it up perfectly.

“Watching Bush talk always gives me that feeling like when you’re watching an alcoholic uncle give a toast at a wedding – you’re just kind of hoping he’ll get through it without messing up too bad, but he inevitably does.” –Jessi Klein

Daily Show vs. O’Reilly

In the half-hour remaining before the Presidential debate, enjoy what could be the funniest clip I have ever seen from “The Daily Show w/ Jon Stewart“. In this 10+ minute long clip, Stewart responds to Bill O’Reilly’s claim that the Daily Show audience is made up of nothing but “stoned slackers”. Good times.

Update: For what should be some of the most intelligent analysis of the debates, check out the Daily Show’s Live Post-debate analysis @ 11pm.

Super Thursday

I am such a political junky. I swear, a Presidential debate is like the Super Bowl to me. I’ll also confess that while watching CNN’s coverage, I’ll be recording NBC’s coverage to watch later!

Yes. I actually care this much. Really.

Wait…that’s not a word!

This week on Real Time w/ Bill Maher, one of the panelist commented that the greatest casualty of the Bush administration is the english language. On that note, here’s a quote from the President and no, “suicider” is NOT a word.

“In other words, he’s willing to use death to stop the advance of freedom. He recruits suiciders, orders suiciders, and has them attack on a regular basis. Because he wants us to withdraw from Iraq, he wants Prime Minister Allawi to lose his will. He wants him to quit and surrender.” –George W. Bush

Speechless

The Kerry Campaign is reporting that John Kerry’s laryngitis has worsened and, consequently, he’ll be missing public appearances leading up to the debates. VP-candidate, John Edwards will be covering the events in his stead. Does anyone else think that this is a great idea? Let Kerry’s laryngitis clear up and send Johnny out there to sway the masses. In my opinion, the campaign has done a terrible job utilizing one of their strongest potentials–namely John Edwards.

Paperback Writer

A few days ago I made my first purchase on bn.com. While I love amazon.com, Barnes & Noble had the books I needed at almost half the price. So how was my first experience at B&N? Let’s just say that if it wasn’t for the good deal (and a handy code from Josh) I would have given up half-way through the account creation process. What the heck is wrong with bn.com? Have they seen amazon’s site? From browsing, to researching, to purchasing Amazon just gets it right from start to end.

ATTN Mr. Barnes or Mr. Noble:

Unless you plan on beating amazon.com’s prices by 50% everytime, you’ve got to rehaul your site. Immediately.

Life Keeps On Spinning

The cool thing about life is that it’s always changing. Just when you think you’ve got everything figured out…BAM…something hits you out of nowhere. I’ve had my share of those moments in the past 6 months and I’m responding to them with each new day. With that in mind, there are new developments on the horizon. In a few days I hope to be able to share the details here with all of you. If you’ve been wondering why posts have been devoid of personal content it’s because so many things are changing each day.

Stay tuned…

Friend-of-a-friend

My buddy and xml guru, Eric, pointed me to a new project called FOAF (friend-of-a-friend). Unlike other social networking projects, FOAF provides an RDF/XML vocabulary to represent information about a user. Using xml FOAF data to say the things you would say of yourself allows computers to interpret this data and answer questions based upon it.

Since computers are pretty dumb, and can’t read human languages, we provide simplistic FOAF descriptions, to help them answer questions such as ‘Show me pictures of Weblog authors interested in … who live near here’, ‘Show me recent articles written by people at this meeting’, ‘Is this person vegetarian?’. FOAF is a ‘Semantic Web’ project, which is an effort to make the Web easier for machines to help us navigate.

To create your own FOAF file, visit FOAF-a-matic. Then publish it to FOAFSpace and provide a link to it on your site. You can find my FOAF file here. Wanna learn more about the project?

Plazes

Sean turned me on to a new social networking service called Plazes. Bascially, you sign-up, download a launcher app, and when you login you register your “plaze”. From there you can see who’s online in your neck of the woods. The service obviously lends itself to users who access the net from multiple locations–which is just about everyone these days. Seeing where your friends are connecting from is pretty cool and the service is really unobtrusive. Sign up and look me up. My nickname is “jeffcarter” Original, eh?

All Clear

Reports from FL are that the Carters survived Ivan in one piece. Their neighborhood took a lot of damage, but their home and property only suffered minor damage. They are all busy now with repairs and clean up. From what I hear half the town now has power, but the other half is still in the dark. The community is really coming together and providng room & shelter for those who are without a place to stay dry. No word yet on the beach house, but after so many have lost so much, property becomes a secondary concern.

Hurricane Ivan: Tornado Update

For visitors looking for info on the family in Panama City, CNN currently has a reporter live on location near the family home. They’ve confirmed that the two death’s associated w/ Ivan have been in Panama City. In my last contact, they reported that at least two tornadoes had touched down in their proximity. They are safely huddled together in the bathtubs and have taken all possible precautions.

More info as it comes in…

Hurricane Ivan

At this hour, a good number of my family members are sitting right in Ivan’s path. Aunts, Uncles & cousins are huddled in bathtubs as I write this protecting themselves from the torrnadoes that are ripping through Panama City, FL. They have no power and aren’t sure how much longer the phone lines will last.

I’ve been watching this summer’s hurricane coverage over the past month and cannot believe how different it feels to be watching news anchors talking about the safety of your loved ones.

To friends & family looking to my site for updates on their safety, stay tuned and I will post updates as I hear from family members in Panama City.
