Hawaiian Blog :: Day 1

In an amazing turn of events, I am posting this from beautiful Maui. My grandparents have a timeshare on the island and my sister and I are making use of it for the next week. Rawk!

With only a few hours of sleep, we boarded our flight at LAX around 8am on Thursday. The flight to Maui covers over 2000 miles and takes a little more than 5 hours. Being a bit paranoid about missing our flight, we got to the airport way too early and ended up sitting for an hour before…well…sitting for five hours. We took our seats in the rear of the plane with our fellow economy class travelers. The guy sitting in front of my sister decided to recline his seat as far back as humanly possible after about 20 seconds of flight. Forntunately for me, his passenger was quite content sitting in the upright position for the whole flight. This left just enough room for the 12″ PowerBook on my flight tray. Armed w/ 40GBs of MP3’s and a season of Nip/Tuck on DVD the flight went by pretty quickly. The PowerBook lasted about 3.5 hours which left me 90 minutes of down time until landing.

Once we landed, I quickly got “leighed” by one of the girls in the terminal. (God, I love that joke. Seriously, it just never gets old.) After getting “leighed” (see!) we picked up our over-packed bags and secured our rental car. Since we flew in on a Friday, our choices in rentals were slim. Needless to say, I spared no expense. For the next week, I’ll be cruising around Maui in a Chrysler Town & Country Mini-Van. No, really. It was either the Mini-van or another Mini-van. No good.

We drove the ten miles or so to our grandparents condo and found it to be rediculous. I had always heard how it overlooked the water and was 5 steps to the beach, blah blah blah. Holy crap. This place really is breath taking. From the corner unit on the 5th floor, you are nearly surrounded on all sides by the Pacific. Windows line the living room and we have an unobstructed view of the Maui sunset. The beach is literally right below us and through the crystal-clear water you can see through at least five feet of ocean. Amazing.

Now, I realize this post is a lot like looking through someone else’s vacation photos. But, being here is very surreal and I only wish I could share this with all of you.

In keeping with this week’s relaxing theme, I’m not tethered to the computer. This is partially due to the fact that Maui isn’t the most connected place in the world. In fact, being unconnected feels pretty darn good. Tomorrow will bring more fun in the ocean. We’ve rented snorkeling gear and bodyboards. We’ve also got a killer snorkeling tour scheduled for Tuesday to a crater who’s name escapes me at the moment. Plenty of photos are being taken and the moblog is once again active, so check it out.

Aloha!
