last night i had the most fucked up dream of all time.
i was living back home in bakersfield with buster and even though it was the present day, the earth was all fucked up. global warming was out of control and climate change had caused everything to dry up and look very much like the end of days.
everything was dead—plants and animals alike.
to make matters worse the only creatures not affected by the climate change were the penguins who had somehow managed to survive the drastic changes in the ecosystem through some loophole of evolution. so aside from the world being a fucking desert, there were penguins everywhere and they were crapping on everything.
because of the apocalypse-like conditions, money/currency had lost it’s value. everyone was super hungry—including buster. this was one of the most chilling feelings i’ve ever had in a dream. knowing that despite all of my planning and preparation, all that i had worked for was quite literally worthless and i was powerless.
at one point in the dream sequence, laine and i were walking to costco in the hopes of convincing them to sell us some food. we were walking around the abandoned warehouse and the only thing left on the shelf was penguin food.
damn dirty penguins.
laine turned to me and said that if i was going to be a hero that i would have to find us food to bring back home to our families. i reached into my pocket and felt the plastic of my Costco AmEx card. I rushed to the register waiving the grey plastic psychotically over my head. for some reason, the supervisor in the costco-smock was still on duty despite the impending end of the human race. when he saw my AmEx card, he rushed us to this hidden aisle that was full of food and most importantly toilet paper.
amazed at what i was seeing, i turned to the costco-boss-man looking for an explanation, but before i could speak i could hear the sound of my alarm clock buzzing.
i opened my eyes and without being fully awake looked at buster and said, “…those fucking penguins buster…they were everywhere.”
this dream has taught me that right before going to bed, i should not a.) listen to a bill maher rant about global warming b.) watch a preview for some animated movie about penguins and c.) think about paying off my AmEx card
also, doesnt everyone think the new header image is snazzy and original…or at least just snazzy?
i’m still trying to get back into the swing of things after the long memorial day weekend.
buster is also feeling the ill-effects of running around my parents’ backyard for three-days-nonstop.
in the 24 hours that we have been home, he has been passed out on the couch for at least 20hrs.
i on the other hand have to be in lab, because i’ve got bills and shit.

when brandon and i went to claremont, we were walking down 2nd street when we noticed that the ‘pirates of plunder’ had taken over the wells fargo atm. my favorite part of their show was the fake bird sitting in the crow’s nest.
i really wish we could have gotten to that atm machine, because in claremont, gnarly head is only $7.

get it? gnarly head.
the guys at rawkblog have posted ben gibbard’s entire solo set from his 2002 show at the knitting factory.
get it while the getting’s good.
p.s. there’s even a cover of girl’s just wanna have fun for all you cyndi lauper fans

jerry falwell died today.
he was a 73-year old fuck.
this photo is courtesy of laist.com and was taken after falwell promised viewers/followers that if they donated $20 million to his ministry that he would take a trip down the water slide at Heritage USA.
cnn et. al are reading the sentiments sent from various political figures. in a testament to the fact that even if you’re a total douche bag people will still say nice things about you when you’re dead the following has been said about Falwell:
John McCain: “…a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his fatih and country.”
Mitt Romney: “...He will be greatly missed, but the legacy of his important work will continue through his many ministries where he put his faith into action.”
Pat Robertson: “A tower of strength on many of the moral issues which have confronted our nation…“
I wish I were making this shit up.
Because you won’t hear anything about Jerry’s bigotry in the mainstream media, here are just a few quotes chronicling the good reverend’s life work courtesy of American Voices of Sexuality (via boingboing):
“Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questionsâ€
“AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexualsâ€
“It appears that America’s anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men’s movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening.”
“If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.”
After the September 11 attacks Falwell said, “I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen.”
Today there is one less hateful voice in the world, it’s just a shame that a life was wasted teaching so many others the finer points of intolerance.
enjoy nonexistence, mr. falwell.

on friday night, brandon and i went out to the claremont folk music festival for the ben harper show.
i had mixed results w/ the photos i snapped in the darkness of bridges auditorium. luckily, the official site had plenty of professional shots to enjoy.
the setlist was one of the most comprehensive and lengthiest sets (over 3hrs) i’ve ever heard ben play. it was essentially broken up into three sets: full-band acoustic, solo acoustic, and full-band electric.
throughout the concert, ben kept talking about how good it was to be back home and to get to play to his old friends. he debuted two new songs (”Fool For a Lonesome Train” & “Lifeline”) from this summer’s forthcoming acoustic album, “Lifeline”.
Set I:
• Oppression
• People Lead
• Gather ‘Round The Stone
• Masters Of War
• There Will Be A Light
• Morning Yearning
• Waiting For You
• Give A Man A Home
• Fool For A Lonesome Train (Brand new song)
• Welcome To The Cruel World
Set II:
• Pleasure And Pain
• When It’s Good
• Walk Away
• Paris Sunrise #7 into
• Lifeline (Brand new song)
Set III:
• Whipping Boy
• God Fearing Man
• Ground On Down/Who Knows
• With My Own Two Hands
• The Woman In You
• Please Bleed

hoy es cinco de mayo.
the shirt i’m wearing has metal collar inserts…i mean…la camisa que estoy usando tiene rellenos del collar del metal
not only does it keep my shirt collar looking awesome but when i get anxious and nervously start to straighten my clothes i’m treated w/ the tactile feel of metal hidden beneath my unassuming collar. this makes me feel like a superhero.
also, i’m so bored w/ the latest bullshit drama that i can barely bring myself to finish this sente…..zzz….zzz.
last night we went and saw ben harper play to a hometown crowd at the bridges auditorium on the claremont college campus. it was amazing. pictures, details and stories are soon to follow.
in many ways cinco de mayo has a more interesting history than the 4th of July. today, the mexican people celebrate victory over an invading french battalion where 5 mexican soldiers died protecting the honor of the mexican flag in the battle at chapultepec castle. as the french soldiers stormed the castle, the soldiers held off their attack as one of the mexican soldiers raced to wrap himself in the mexican flag and jumped from the castle top to prevent the french from burning their flag.
with that in mind, it’s time to celebrate.

today i learned that if i sing-along to a dixie chicks song while looking at buster that he will lower his head and growl. the face he makes looks something like this:

when i stop singing, he comes over and tries to lick my ears as if to say, “do yours hurt too?”
after school i was wildly hungry so i went and had thai food at ranu. as i was eating my steamed rice i remembered this quote by mitch:
Rice is great if you’re really hungry and want to eat two thousand of something.
ok time for a walk w/ you know who.
i’m beginning to get really excited for this weekend’s folk music festival in claremont.specifically, i’m looking forward to the sold out SOLO ACOUSTIC ben harper concert on friday night. the bridges auditorium is a great venue that holds less than 2k people and i’m jazzed that ben wanted to do this fundraiser concert for him hometown.
tom morello–of rage against the machine fame–is the opening act and anytime you would pay to JUST see the opening act of a concert, then you know you’re gonna have a good time.
show starts at 8pm and ben’s up around 9pm. so who wants to come with?
