no surprises

i remember buying “ok computer” back in the fall of 1997.

i bought it at costco.

it would be a few years until i realized the irony of buying a very non-commercial album—that would become on of the most critically acclaimed albums of the decade—at a warehouse superstore.

i used to listen to the disc over and over again in my aftermarket jvc car stereo.

back then i was still driving to church 3x a week and my only solace was that it gave me an hour to listen to the album.

i would usually switch to “no surprises” as i neared the church.

I’ll take a quiet life…a handshake….some carbon monoxide.
no alarms and no surprises, please.

this is my favorite line of the song.

our church was big on shaking everyone’s hand. in a few hours, i would find myself hearing this line in my head as person-after-person extended their hand in christian love to brother jeff.

i have a (bad?) habit of singing ‘this is what you get..’ over and over again in my head when i’m forced to deal with other people’s stupid shit. which is nearly everyday.

oh, and in case it’s not obvious, i sing it to the tune from karma police.
