Monthly Archive for May, 2008
after literally years of looking for the perfect names/icons for my storage devices, i’ve finally found an andy warhol icon set and named my external storage devices accordingly.
for the record, chairman mao is all business and handles 100% of my backup duties.
marilyn, on the other hand, is all about fun—music, movies, etc
so tonight i’ve been perusing my flickr archives and realized that i’ve been posting mobile photos to the internet (us old timers used to call them mo-blogs) since early 2003. back in those days cingular/att charged me by the kilobyte. each picture i posted would cost about $0.30 USD. what’s sad is i easily would have paid double for the opportunity to digitally document my life from anywhere at anytime.
looking back at these old photos is like blowing the dust off of an old diary and only finding pictures that speak more than any number of words i could have written. i think i’ll pull a few of these up now and again and describe them with the passion of someone showing off their vacation photos.
this is a photo taken on Saturday, 8.7.2004 with my incredibly crappy Treo 600 phone-cam. what you’re looking at through the fuzz is my ticket stub to see “Garden State” at the UC Irvine University Town Centre theatre.
I can remember standing in line to see gardenstate and talking to volunteers working a Kerry ‘04 table. Standing in line with my sister and brandon i asked, “is there anyway we cannot win this election by 7-10%?” November would prove me wrong and reminded me how diverse the thinking is in the good ol’ USofA.
it was also the day before “her” birthday and i would spend this night desperately trying to forget her with willie nelson’s help.
as we walked in and took our seats, i wondered if the guy from scrubs (zach braff) could pull off writing and starring in a film. the lights dimmed and the flim opened with a psychotropic-drugged braff completely numb to his flight crash landing into oblivion. amidst the storm of panic, he reached up and turned on his seat’s vent and felt the cool air blow across his face while the world around him was headed for disaster.
from that moment i was sold. the rest of the film could have been puppets telling knock-knock jokes and i would still have ranked it among my favorites of all time.
when i snapped this picture, i had no clue that years later it would still mean so much.
the next time someone asks me why i insist on documenting my life, i’m going to refer them to this post.
i love my iPhone.
i hate my iPhone’s camera.
yesterday, tuaw.com posted the single greatest iPhone tip of all time.
While we’re on the subject, I’ll offer my tip for taking decent iPhone photos. Unlike nearly every other camera ever made, the iPhone exposes an image when the “shutter button” is released, not depressed. With that in mind, here’s the three step process I follow
1. Press and hold the “shutter button”
2. Compose the shot
3. ReleaseThe tendency is to compose the shot and then tap the button, often resulting in blur. Try this method and watch the results.
ever since reading this, my iPhone pictures of buster have been tack sharp!
lately, i’ve been working longer-than-usual hours at school. consequently, my buster-time has suffered. over the past couple of days, buster has taken to moving his bed right up against the front-door whenever i leave the house.
now upon arriving home at some ridiculous hour, i have to gently open the front door and nudge his bed from the doorway before being able to enter.
my guilt is almost unbearable.

in my 30+ plus years on the planet i’ve learned a lot of things that could save the less experienced from the sort of thing that will piss off your life.
today, i’m starting a new series of posts entitled “one lonely word of wisdom“. i’ll use this series of posts to share a few of the pearls of wisdom that this roller-coaster-affair of a life has taught me.
one lonely word of wisdom #327:
at some point in your life you’ll find yourself renting an apartment that is too small for all of your belongings (read: shit).
undoubtedly, you will turn to the sub-standard-sized cabinet above your refrigerator to store items that “have no home“.
today’s 1LWoW is this—while the bastard-cabinet of the kitchen is a good place for your unwanted items (read: shit) avoid storing the scented candles you bought b/c your ex-girlfriend liked having grown-up-time amidst the subtle fragrance of lavendar in the bastard-cabinent. doing so will guarantee that all of the worthless items in that cabinet will forever be impregnated w/ the smell of lilac, jasmine, etc.
you’ll thank me later.
…and yes i used the words “grown-up-time” and “impregnated” in the same blog post.
so here are some photos that the pretty girl and i took at the aforementioned claremont music festival. keep in mind that these were taken with a humble canon powershot point and shoot camera. my dSLR was being put to better use at the time of the festival…more on that later.
we staked out sweet spots on the lawn a mere 100feet or so from the stage. behind us were these four lesbian chicks of varying levels of attractiveness. what they may have lacked in hottness, they made up for in their lack of inhibition. the pretty girl said that she was officially keeping track of how many times she caught me stealing glances of the four-way-all-girl makeout session going on behind us. when i asked her for my total at the end of the evening, she said she quit counting in an effort to save me the embarrassment.
lesbians FTW.
so after graciously standing in line for coffee, the pretty girl decided to bring us back this treat. unfortunately after knowing each other for nearly a decade, she forgot that peanuts represent an anaphylactic shock type experience for me. she made it up to me by immediately running back to the ever-increasing line and returning with peanut-free ice cream.
good times.
so on saturday the pretty girl and i went to the claremont folk music festival in claremont, ca. as you may recall, brandon and i went last year and watched ben harper drop new music from the then unreleased “lifeline” album.
this year’s event was much more low-key and community oriented. the entire festival was held at sycamore elementary school (ben’s grade school alma mater). as the local artisans were packing up their tents and goods we claimed our place on the grade-school lawn with our trusty red & blue plaid blanket.
from about 100feet away we watched jackson browne, followed by ben harper and then taj mahal each rock incredible sets. benharper’s website has all the details, but here is the setlist which included a brand-new track (spanish red wine) for the new studio album.
1. Pleasure And Pain
2. Morning Yearning
3. I Shall Not Walk Alone
4. Black Rain
5. Gather ‘Round The Stone
6. There Will Be A Light
7. Suzie Blue
8. Spanish Red Wine
9. Tomorrow Is A Long Time
ben brought out different local musicians to accompany him throughout the set and even had his mom sing with him on “spanish red wine” and the dylan cover “tomorrow is a long time”
(all awesome looking photos were taken from benharper.net)
in honor of cinco de mayo, here’s a photo describing the wonderful ignorance of being a red-state bigot.

told ya.
- At the Claremont music festival with misty waiting for taj mahal, Jackson browne and ben harper #
- Ben harper heading to the stage in mere seconds #
- Ben Harper & Taj Mahal were incredible at last night’s Claremont Music Festival. Pics & Video to follow later today… #
- thinking the pretty girl and I are going to head out for brunch. french toast FTW! #
- Um when r u leaving? The doors unlocked #
- Someone blogged about the song "muskrat love" and now guess what song is stuck in my head? #
- 24hrs until @st0ney arrives for his 2008 SoCal Tour #
- @stoney they are chilling as we speak #
- @st0ney you mean you dont like going to viewmymessage.com and trying to remember a random 12 character username and a lame password? #
ya know how you know if you’re cool or not? just ask yourself if you like panic at the disco. if you answer in the affirmative, then you’re gold.
also, if you use internet explorer it doesnt matter if you like panic b/c anything rad that i try to post on my blog seems to break IE. so apparently the coolness test consists of 2 things…
so lately, i’ve become addicted to micro-blogging the events of my life on twitter. i’ve realized that in doing so, i’ve literally constructed an outline for numerous daily blog posts. this is good news for you.
tomorrow stonebraker is flying into SoCal and i’m going to pick him up b/c that’s what good friends fucking do. he’s going to be busy with all of his top-secret-business so we might only have time for 1-15 drinks on friday afternoon. i told him that the best way to conduct his top-secret-business is to be drooling-drunk.
i’ve been listening to “pretty.odd.” on a non-stop basis and i even learned the chords to “we’re so starving” so that i could entertain buster with my guitar/vocal stylings. the louder i sing and the more i make the song about him the more he goes crazy. i’m not quite sure if he LOVES it or if it’s the equivalent to puppy water-boarding.

so today i was reading some random blog whose name escapes me and they mentioned “muskrat love” by captain & tenille. consequently, i’ve had that fuck song stuck in my head all day. also, when i was in 4th grade i had a huge crush on a girl named tenille but she was in love with the cool kid from school whose dad was a big shot doctor. last i heard that kid was all strung out on meth. so in addition to having a shitty song in my head, i’ve been feeling bad about turning out “better” than the cool kid in 4th grade.
