today is my grandpa’s birthday.
his name is J.L. Carter.
he was born in a small farm town bordering the even smaller town of norman, oklahoma.
as the universe would have it, he is my namesake, my lineage and my best link to the past.
he has seen more in his lifetime than i could ever imagine to experience and has done so with more class than i could hope ever hope for myself.
looking back on my life, he was one of my earliest heroes.
you see, from the start he and i were the best of buddies and tonight i was reminded that we still are.

on those ubiquitous-sunday-morning drives to church, he would play songs from his 8-track player and mesmerize me with stories of times past.
keep in mind, that i refused to let him go anywhere without me. my baby sister could find her way to church with my grandma; i was going to ride with the man of the house.
the short run from the front door of their humble porch to the driver side of his green & white ‘77 chevy cheyenne was inconsequential. (i had timed myself numerous times and no one could best me.)
him in the driver seat, me standing on the bench by his side, my arm around his neck, together we drove.
the music seemed larger than life.
i remember listening to this song and i can almost feel his truck’s rough bench cloth seat and remember the smell of his aftershave; i squint to see the road signs ahead while the sun shines in our faces on Highway 58.
we pull up through the church’s tortuous gravel parking lot and i hop out. we’re here and there’s work to be done before everyone else arrives…but the drive was good…
…25 years later it still is.

ok, i admit that it took me about 30seconds to figure out the punchline of this cartoon…nice job Daryl Cagle.

Today Apple Inc issued this statement opposing Proposition 8 in California:
Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.
good on you, Apple.

so the new ryan adams album is out next week, but you can check out “cardinology” for free over here on iLike.
personally, i’m digging on “crossed out name” but your mileage my vary. here’s classic ryan adams courtesy of youtube. i think this is my favorite ryanadam’s performance and keeps me squeaking on my harmonica in attempts to duplicate his sound. so far, my harmonica skills are slightly better than FAIL but not quite up to being just “suck”.
in unrelated news, today i helped teach a 4hour lab to first-year med students. the topic was blood histology and it was exhausting. to compound the monotony of teaching blood histo was the fact that the class was divided into 2 sections which meant teaching it once and then repeating it 120mins later. this effect was also compounded by the fact that the class was broken up into 12 small groups per lab period.
by the end of the day, i felt like i had repeated myself 1000x and caught a glimpse of what it must be like to give a political stump speech and hit the same talking point ad nauseam. I guess the only difference was that everything I said was true…everytime I said it.
This is a photo of the two presidential candidates immediately following the 3rd presidential debate.
One of them has a strong lead over the other.

…can you guess who the front-runner is?
with exactly 2 weeks remaining until the general election, i wanted to send a message to the all important “undecided voter“.
you are an uninformed attention whore.
now before you call me a jerk, realize that these are among the stupidest people in the country. for nearly the past 2 years, both Obama and McCain have been campaigning around-the-clock from coast-to-coast and only the most intentionally ignorant and purposely uninformed could still be “undecided”.
the geniuses at the Daily Show illustrate this point with the following pie chart:

in closing, consider the words of David Sedaris (whose latest book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, is pure genius) has the following to say with regards to undecided voters:
To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.
- @megran ok so i didnt know what a “gimlet” was and had to google it…and now i want one. maybe it’s good for a cold? #
- 2mins until debate time! #
- Even though this “joe the plumber” scenario is trite and anecdotal, McCain used it much more effectively. Advantage McCain early on. #
- @toocuteforyou25 I like the way those rules sound! It’s a debate drinking game for those with this crazy fuck flu #
- Johnny’s really busting out the *zings* tonight…Obama needs to stay classy, cut down on the nuance and bring it right back to McCain #
- damn, bob schieffer, is a cool dude. we could use 3 more debates w/ him moderating. #
- totally didnt think I’d get to here Obama call out McCain for the “kill him” comments characteristic of Palin rallies. #
- john mccain sounds like he’s “butt-hurt” over this whole presidential campaign thing…maybe he needs a hug. #
- hey schieffer, you can’t slow-pitch McCain a Bill Ayers question and then try to cut off Obama’s rebuttal…dont be a dick. #
- given my current cold/flu, i’m going to take a shot of nasalspray everytime McCain brings up BS about Bill Ayers http://tinyurl.com/3o9cop #
- Q: Do you think Palin is qualified to be President? Obama’s answer should have been: “No I do not and here’s why…” #
- @Supertiff agreed he should have went with “hell no, dog gonnit dontcha know?” #
- As someone in medicine, McCain’s healthcare knowledge is laughable and a $5000 tax credit instead of national coverage? really? 5k? #
- Obama’s answer to Roe v Wade sounds like someone who’s studied law and the constitution while McCain’s just sounds partisan. Why? Oh, yeah. #
- Obama just referenced that Illinois physicians having to first uphold the Hippocratic oath in his Roe v Wade debate. Nicely done. #current #
- McCain just did the air quotes thing while referring to the “health of the mother”Amazing. johnny is Ballin’ out 2night #
- I agree w Obama Teachers should be highly educated, the best-of-the-best and the highest paid of all workers. It should be a hard job 2 land #
- Wow. McCain’s ideas of education are even worse than his understanding of health care. Eliminate certification tests for teachers? Um…no? #
- Best line of the evening: “I dont think America’s youth are an interest group…they are the future.” –Obama #
- i think i just heard McCain snort after his last penguin-like-laugh. #
- closing comments summary: McCain: FEAR! oh my god! Aaggh! Obama: We got this…so let’s go to work. #
- Closing jeffcarter comments about tonight’s debate: McCain sure does stick his tongue out a lot. That is all. #
- I agree with @toocuteforyou25 the closing 30sec of open mics sure did make McCain look like an ass…hmmm wonder what that means? #
- I’m proud to be the 221st follower of @joetheplumber keep up the good work joe! #

today, funny or die brings us this video gem from hayden panettiere (the cheerleader from heroes).

- and today my cold is 2x what it was yesterday..awesome…in happier news the new MacBooks are bad ass. #
- It also appears that Apple discontinued that god-awful looking black MacBook…that thing was sacrilegious #
- Wait a second…there’s no FireWire port on the new MacBooks? jesus, Apple. #
- @mattstegner not to mention that lack of FireWire means no ‘target disk mode’. I tx large micrographs almost daily using this method. #
