budget cuts and the health care crisis

while the highest cost of the failed bush policies are counted in the number of dead in iraq, other critical programs are being cut in order to fund the administration’s errant foreign policies.

From the American Association of Medical Colleges:

Bush Budget Cuts Will Cripple U.S. Teaching Hospitals and Erode Medical Progress

“The AAMC strongly opposes the administration’s proposal to slash Medicare payments to America’s teaching hospitals. Cutting indirect medical education (IME) payments by more than 60 percent, combined with other Medicare cuts affecting all hospitals, will have devastating results. Millions of Medicare patients—as well as the uninsured, the disabled, and the severely ill—rely on teaching hospitals for health care and community services. Such unprecedented cuts to these institutions will endanger their ability to provide the full spectrum of patient care and treatment, erode their fragile trauma and emergency services, and impede the progress they have made in advancing the health of all Americans through education and medical research.”

abre los ojos (open your eyes)

the best part of a SoCal winter is the early morning’s vanilla sky. if you wake up at just the right time, you can catch the morning sun at its most vulnerable. it’s good to know that nature can find its way through all the modern-day abuse long enough to say hello.

’vanilla sky‘ was a good movie but the original ‘Abre los Ojos‘ was amazing. penelope cruz stared in both versions, but cameron crowe took a few too many liberties from the original for my taste. nonetheless, the end scene is the thing that film school courses are made of…you can watch it here.

there are a handful of films that i prefer to watch in their original spanish versions: ‘abre los ojos’,  ’maria llena eres de gracia’ (maria full of grace) and ‘diarios de motocicleta’ (the motorcycle diaries). if you’re interested in learning spanish and you’re taking a spanish class you should drop out right now. NOW. instead, spend your tuition money on an immersion trip to spain or spend the same amount of time watching the aforementioned movies and telemundo.

Also, you should find a person who speaks fluent spanish and insist that they never speak english to you again. this will piss you off, but you’ll learn more than you ever thought possible…but it will really piss you off; in fact, you’ll probably hate them for it in the beginning.

my spanish-speaking-friend graduated from medschool last year and now she’s a neuro surgeon resident on the east coast. she taught me how to speak to patients in spanish and how to translate the paxinos neuro atlas into spanish.

these days, i’m looking for a local who will refuse to speak to me in english and reprimand me for my sloppy spanish. if you’re interested, you should apply.

also, i will probably end up hating whomever volunteers for this position.
