on monday, misty and i commemorated memorial day by taking a trip into pasadena to visit the mountain view mausoleum. remembering those you’ve loved and lost seems so much easier when you’re blessed to be in a place filled with so much beauty.

this past saturday, my baby sister graduated from law school and once again continues to find ways to make me proud. she’s amazing that way.
welcome WSU…find your seats through B Door:

“stage dark, go lights in 5…4…3…2…”

draped in velvet, the class of 2009…

addressing the crowd from 35 rows back…embrace what the shot gives you and exploit it!
the grove in anaheim has that new-classic-look that Silver Efex Pro loves to play with…
more to come…
last weekend my buddy josh was in town and he stopped by to give me some lighting tips w/ my new Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash.
here’s a few shots i took of buster that were taken using josh’s techniques and—of course—finished up using Nik Software.
this is a shot of Smiegel the Cat that i took over the xmas holiday. the pretty girl can buy any sort of random pet outfit and Smiegel is more than happy to parade around in it for days.
i dig this shot b/c the angle & lighting remind me of Che Guevara and if any of our pets were to lead a revolution, it would definitely be Smiegel.
the pretty girl lives in the historic part of town and in a 100 lifetimes i wouldnt be able to capture all that surrounds our waking life.

hiding behind the lens feels safe and this is my most recent attempt at being still…
Canon 50D :: f4.5 :: 28mm :: ISO 100 :: Lexar Digital Media
as luck would have it, my schedule has allowed me to take a few extra days off from school to spend with misty and the family back home.
the magnitude of this news was not lost on buster who is super-jazzed to get to hang out with his favorite feline “Smiegel the Cat” (yes, the cat’s name is Smiegel but that’s another post entirely).
here’s more photographic proof that you may be prepared to handle on an idle monday:
you really haven’t lived until you’ve spent a weekend stalking your pets and waiting for a candid moment that will win you 1st place at the county fair.
often i will find myself rambling on-and-on about buster and the joys of dog-ownership to anyone who will listen is in shouting range.
one question i often get asked is, “…with your hectic med-student-schedule, how does Buster keep himself entertained while you’re away saving the world?” (you too, have probably found yourself wondering the same thing.)
explaining buster’s life is too complex for words, therefore, i’ve taken these photographs to sum up his busy life.
this…
followed by this…
..and repeat.
this weekend i had a chance to take the camera out for a drive and shoot a couple of shots of snow-capped mountains and ridiculously blue skies.
the full set is here.
on sunday, i met up with the fam in “the oc” and it was rad.
my sister made green-spice-cake-cupcakes in honor of st. patrick’s day, and so tonight i’m celebrating w/ Mr. Jack and these green-vegan-delights.
also, i brought the camera and shot these photos of brandon, because he’s new enough to the family that i can stick a giant lens in his face and he wont say anything about it. (i trust this will last for no less than 6months or so.) i told him i was going to make him look like a male-model and so i gave him the “american eagle filter” treatment. sorry ladies, he’s taken.
welcome to the family!

so i finished up w/ some lab stuff and decided to waste the rest of my saturday afternoon writing up photoshop actions. here’s one i’m kind of liking…basically, it takes a photo and adds the gallery matte and title, etc.
hmmm.
so i decided to play around w/ the blog’s header image. doing so was born out of boredom more than desire.
the current image is from a photo i took of the church/school i went to as a kid.
during the winter break, i went back there, took some pictures and had a talk w/ myself b/c god wasnt answering her phone.
usually, i dont get into editing/filtering my shots; however, the 100 or so photos i took at the church are the exception. they have become photoshop’s bitch.
no photoshop filter is too much and destroying them w/ pixels is quite therapeutic.
the header’s image is a shot of the church’s placard hazed over with a sickly green mask and a nice film grain. hopefully using the bold, extra-large-super-size-me “onelonelysuccess” font to hide it was an obvious choice.
pretty sure that this is a transient thing, so enjoy it while you will…in fact, instead of blogging maybe i’ll just throw a new header image up now and again.
we’ll see. astronaut jones OUT!
so i borrowed a canon speedlight 420ex, and since buster is the only person who will consider living with me, he was my test subject.
after a trip home to bakersfield, buster passed out. i took this opportunity to play around w/ the camera and a few lens combos.
also i hate low lighting and not having a fancy canon speedlite 580 ex flash to combat the resulting noisy images.
nonetheless here’s slumbering buster:
once again making use of the Crossroads plugin to share an old set of flickr photos.
