so i’ve spent the past few weekends traveling around w/ laine and the pretty girl. most recently, we enjoyed the dave matthews band live at the greek theatre in berkeley, ca.
at some point on night #2, laine saw me struggling to hold my camera straight for longer that 2.2 seconds. lucky for you she decided to take over filming duties and caught this super-hard-to-find-rare-collectors-edition of the “fuzzy wuzzy” improv.
now arent you glad i like red wine and laine likes being sober?
so here are some photos that the pretty girl and i took at the aforementioned claremont music festival. keep in mind that these were taken with a humble canon powershot point and shoot camera. my dSLR was being put to better use at the time of the festival…more on that later.
we staked out sweet spots on the lawn a mere 100feet or so from the stage. behind us were these four lesbian chicks of varying levels of attractiveness. what they may have lacked in hottness, they made up for in their lack of inhibition. the pretty girl said that she was officially keeping track of how many times she caught me stealing glances of the four-way-all-girl makeout session going on behind us. when i asked her for my total at the end of the evening, she said she quit counting in an effort to save me the embarrassment.
lesbians FTW.
so after graciously standing in line for coffee, the pretty girl decided to bring us back this treat. unfortunately after knowing each other for nearly a decade, she forgot that peanuts represent an anaphylactic shock type experience for me. she made it up to me by immediately running back to the ever-increasing line and returning with peanut-free ice cream.
so on saturday the pretty girl and i went to the claremont folk music festival in claremont, ca. as you may recall, brandon and i went last year and watched ben harper drop new music from the then unreleased “lifeline” album.
this year’s event was much more low-key and community oriented. the entire festival was held at sycamore elementary school (ben’s grade school alma mater). as the local artisans were packing up their tents and goods we claimed our place on the grade-school lawn with our trusty red & blue plaid blanket.
from about 100feet away we watched jackson browne, followed by ben harper and then taj mahal each rock incredible sets. benharper’s website has all the details, but here is the setlist which included a brand-new track (spanish red wine) for the new studio album.
1. Pleasure And Pain
2. Morning Yearning
3. I Shall Not Walk Alone
4. Black Rain
5. Gather ‘Round The Stone
6. There Will Be A Light
7. Suzie Blue
8. Spanish Red Wine
9. Tomorrow Is A Long Time
ben brought out different local musicians to accompany him throughout the set and even had his mom sing with him on “spanish red wine” and the dylan cover “tomorrow is a long time”
(all awesome looking photos were taken from benharper.net)
so last night i was talking to my girl on the phone and the following conversation took place:
me: hey go to ebay.com i want your advice on something
her: ok…
[pause...pause...pause]
me: are you there?
her: yeah…oh and there are boobs on ebay
me: what? no…ebay.com…e-b-a-y dot c-o-m
her: i know how to get to ebay and there are boobs here.
me: what page did you go to on ebay?
her: the front page!
[i log on to ebay...and indeed see a set of bosoms on the front page]
me: whoa. that’s awesome.
her: how did that happen?
me: its hard to explain and i cant talk right now b/c i have to blog this.
so yeah, ebay decided to put up dynamic content of seller’s gallery pictures and some dude was apparently selling some 70s-esque nudity and it made it to the front page.
here’s the screen-capture-fun (you’ll want to click for the “embiggened” version:
on saturday night, the pretty girl and i went out to dinner with some of her friends from work and our funny was in top form. if you’re a couple in need of a good double-date, then you should really keep us in mind. we dont disappoint. i mean we dont put out or anything, but we’re really good at keeping you laughing w/ our witty banter and all.
after dinner we couples went our separate ways, because you should always keep people wanting more.
meanwhile, the pretty girl and i went home and watched “dan in real life” b/c hanre said it was so good that she actually bought it on dvd. i was digging it a lot until i saw that dane cook had a supporting role; i held my breath for a few minutes waiting for the movie to get shitty, but dane’ character was just enough of a tool for dane to pull it off. big stretch much? as for the rest of the cast they were perfect and the dad was played by the guy who played frasier’s dad. i kept waiting to see eddie the dog hop on the couch and for niles to say something self-depricating.
in other news, my buddy josh is in utah shooting photos and teaching courses w/ the DLWS crew. after that he’s heading to orlando for photoshop world. yeah, his life sucks.
i think to celebrate photoshop world, i’m going to photoshop my head on all sorts of historical figures b/c i’ve been learning a lot from lonnie.
during the long thanksgiving weekend the pretty girl and i spent the evenings cooking up all sorts of goodness. when i say “we” i mean that she did the cooking and that i followed instructions. i am very good with simple. clear. concise. instructions.
she understands this about me and proceeds accordingly.
first “we” made these pumpkin bars with homemade icing and they were amazing.
the pretty girl’s house has this incredible-pro-rachel-ray-oven and the pecan snowball cookies she baked in it were AWESOME.
this is baby-smiegel and after a few hours of cooking/baking he was insistent upon being fed.
this is baby-smiegel with his big brother mork eating while we cooked. we think that the kitten was trying his best to impersonate his big brother’s eating technique.
after they finished eating, each of the cats did there own thing. smiegel sprawled out on the floor and mork headed for quieter comforts in his tent.
in the meantime, the humans sampled their creations. oh and the girl even made a care package of treats for me to take to stonebraker when i fly up to seattle on wednesday.
so i was browsing through my itunes library and found this random ‘jewel’ album amongst the cool music.
“why the hell do i have this album?” i asked myself.
scrolling through the tracklist, i found the song “down so long” and i remember exactly why i own this bland-radio-friendly album.
it was the summer of 2001 and my girl and i were in vegas for a vacation away from everything but each other.
we’ve never needed anything less than one another to have a good time. we had no need for expensive shows, risky craps tables or expensive alcohol; we had each other and we could keep each other high the entire time.
as was often the case, we found ourselves perusing the casinos (people watching was one of our favorite hobbies). a few hours spent in the mega-casinos convinced us that the vegas gods had synchronized their musak because over the course of 3 days we heard “down so long” at least two-dozen times.
by the end of our trip we had even worked out a dance to the overly-familiar tune. if i close my eyes and remember, i can hear the song playing in the elevator and feel a smile welling up from nowhere.
so tonight i stumbled over this track and consequently i’m enjoying the feeling of being in vegas with my best friend.
“…i’ve been down so long, that the end must be drawing near.”
so last weekend i drove up to the psudeo-northern-parts of california w/ the pretty girl.we played with all the dials in the jetta—especially the ipod/radio.so i was driving on the 99 Freeway and told her, “hey, there’s a song i want you to hear on the ipod.”she scrolled through my iPhone’s playlist while i kept my eyes attentive to the road and the amazing rain that had overtaken my windshield.as she strummed through the music, i stole a glance and saw my song come into view.“yeah that one! that one right there! it’s amazing!”she didnt say anything.i explained,”dude, this song just gets me deep down, play it!”the pretty girl looked at me w/ a puzzled glance and said, “…the theme from brokeback mountain? the theme from brokeback mountain gets you deep down?”i spent the next couple of minutes explaining that i meant to reference the song just above the brokeback song and that i ONLY had the theme from brokeback mountain on my phone b/c it was Stonebraker’s personalized ringtone.this made her laugh and if there’s one thing i dig it’s the way she laughs.the moral of this post is that stonebraker’s ringtone is the gay-man’s-anthem.
