the vendetta red reunion show (a concert report)

so my calendar refused to cooperate and I missed out on the “one-night-only” vendetta red reunion show at seattle’s ‘el corazon‘ this weekend.

fortunately for me, i live in the future and youtube is replete with shaky-cam-style-video-coverage. as promised, the band played ‘sisters of the red death‘ in it’s entirety followed by an hour-long encore of favorites.

the seattle PI had an article regarding all the controversy surrounding the reunion show—specifically the absence of founding VR member Erik Chapman.

when asked about the lineup for the reunion show lead singer/frontman zach davidson said:

“The thing with Vendetta Red — it was, kinda like whoever I could get to play with me at the time,” he says. “Throughout the years, some people stuck around for longer than others, and I did it until it stopped being fun. And all I know is that it’s fun right now.”

notably for those of us from bakersfield, ca the absence of VR drummer, joseph childres. a quick google search reveals that we’ve lost joseph to christianity and the xtian music scene…fingers crossed we get him back soon.

here are a few highlight clips from saturday’s show from some rad dude who lives in georgia and made the flight to seattle for the show…you’re a better man than me, brother.

opera music played as the band made their way to the stage and played track one: ‘vendetta red cried rape on their date with destiny’

‘a joyless euphoria’

the genius of michael stipe is especially appreciated when he participates in music outside of what has been crafted as his own. tonight’s example is his collaboration with dashboard confessional on their emo/hipster tune “hands down”. (tune and video available here)

once you’ve heard the stipe-infused-duet, the original track finds itself screaming demands for stipe’s baritone influence.

enjoy “hands down” by dashboard confessional featuring michael stipe (track available on iTunes):

all of this being said, no one can question Chris Carrabba’s ability, inspiration or command. compare, contrast and enjoy:

iPhone 3G S Video Star (the buster abides)

so here’s video of Buster tearing up a bone while I record his antics with the all new iPhone 3G S. Conditions were low light (only one cfl was running) and the subject was a tan puggle, lying on tan carpet covered by a tan blanket right next to a tan bed. also, the youtube-compressed-version compares fairly with the original quicktime .mov file but there is noticeable compression artifacts in the YouTube version as compared to the original.

One last observation is the audio quality…it is superb. In all of my recording tests, the audio proved to be excellent. In this video, I’m playing “lonesome train” by ben harper and the sound is more than acceptable considering that buster’s bone-chomping is very distinct from the background audio.

still, having a video camera of this quality with one-touch publishing to YouTube made the iPhone 3G S’s cost of entry well-worth it for me…and Buster.

Verdict of iPhone 3G S Video Recording:
Video Quality = 7/10
Audio Quality = 9/10

P.S. Look at me! I’m like those kids from Engadget!

the fifth beatle (watch your back ringo)

stumbling around youtube will consume your life if you’re not careful…tonight i’m letting it.

here’s a great video featuring Billy Preston aka The Fifth Beatle (may he rest in peace) sitting in on the studio recording of “get back“.

billy preston sat in and contributed keyboard tracks for the White Album, Abbey Road and Let It Be; he was one of george harrison’s best friends and contributed so much of what we love about these records. if none of this beatles talk rings a bell, billy wrote/composed “you are so beautiful (to me)” which joe cocker made famous.

billy preston IS “the 5th beatle” and frankly, Ringo needs to watch his back b/c 4th place is up for grabs.

p.s. god-damn-fucking-yoko

using one’s powers for good

so this girl is one of my favorite people. if i had her vocal/guitar skills, i would hope that i could bring it this hard.

here’s kay pettigrew performing that timeless classic, “the fresh prince of belair” folk-style.

i wonder if she would be free the weekend of june 27th for the wedding?

wake me up when big media gets it

it’s tuesday night and that probably means you’re in need of a catchy tune with an equally catchy yet almost hypnotic video…am i right?

yeah, internet, i know your body.

enjoy the video for “halloween head” by ryan adams because i said so:

Halloween Head by Ryan Adams

oh, and yeah, the video i embedded is from MySpace b/c the MARKETING GENIUSES over at Universal Music Group decided that they would post the video to this little known tune on YouTube BUT DISABLE FUCKING EMBEDDING.

why would they NOT want me to talk/blog/share this video? could someone slap me on the head when big media finally gets it that an artist like ryan adams THRIVES on this type of sharing (read: publicity).

i’ll resist getting started on the idiotic logic of publishing a corporate-approved/sponsored video to YouTube without allowing said video to be embedded in situations such as this.

un-be-fucking-ievable.
